Fabulous Fifteenth Fabric Freebie

Yes, it is that time again!!! I hope you like my fabric choices this month!! I love them. This time it is 8 FQ from Connecting Threads "Hope Chest" collection. It was on special a couple of weeks ago and I needed some fabric for a BOM, and I fell in love with this red and yellow collection. So wanted to share it with you.

I made this block for our guild BOM.

It's called a "10 Minute Block" and it only has three seams! (Not counting the stitching down of the cathedral window center!) It was super easy and if you want to see how to make it go here. Our guidelines were for five 5 inch squares and the unfinished block size is 9 1/2". I think it turned out real cute.

Now to enter the giveaway for the fabric: Just leave a comment on this post telling me if you wash and press your fabric before you use it. Why or Why not?

99.9 % of the time I wash and press all my new fabric. Once in a while (if I'm in a hurry) I won't, but I really don't like the sizing that is on most new fabric. Even though ironing is my very most dreaded household chore, there is something soothing about ironing new fabric!! So, your fat quarters are washed and pressed!!

I'll draw sometime Friday or Saturday and post then!

Blessings to Ya'll!!!!

Since I won last month's giveaway, you don't need to enter me in this month (though the fabric is beautiful) but I did want to put in my experience with washing fabrics. When I started quilting, everything was quilted by hand and you just didn't toss those things in the washing machine with reckless abandon. I wanted the sizing out of the fabrics, so I washed everything as soon as I brought it home. Then I started making mostly scrap quilts and the scraps I gleaned from the LQS scrap basket would often end up in frayed knots going through the wash. Most quilts are machine quilted now, and machine washed, so the sizing will be removed eventually. I let it happen after the quilt is made, rather than before. If I am going to make an heirloom quality quilt and hand quilt it, I wash before piecing. There you have it. : )

Lovely fabrics... thanks for the chance to win them, Doniene!

I used to wash fabrics before cutting into them but got tired of that quickly. And then... precuts... can't wash them without a giant mess.

Another issue is that the fabric sizing in new fabrics is actually helpful when making traditional blocks... you don't have to use as much starch/sizing.

I no longer prewash and use color catchers when I wash the finished quilts. Haven't had a problem yet!

Hey. I do not wash my fabrics before I start a project. Mainly because I'm lazy, but I'm also not an experienced quilter (or a quilter at all for that matter) so I haven't had much experience with washing.

Beautiful fabrics, thanks for the giveaway.

I do prewash fabric that I pickup at a yard sale or a flea market, but then I have to wash any other fabrics that will be used in the same quilt, so in short most of my fabrics are prewashed.LOL!!

Beautiful fabrics!! I seldom wash my fabrics... One of the reasons is I'm lazy :) another reason is I'm trust the quality of the fabrics.. :)

Pretty block and fabrics!
Precuts are the only fabrics I do not wash and I don't use them very often. Everything else gets washed. Red and black fabrics get washed with color catchers. I don't like the feel or smell of the sizing and don't have trouble piecing with the washed fabrics. I always press my fabric before I use it.
Thanks, Doniene.

I don't prewash fabrics because I don't like the tangled threads, and I do like the sizing in the fabric. Thanks for the giveaway!

This fabric is so cheerful. We have made the "10 minute block" in our guild too. I only prewash reds. They make me nervous. I also wash flannel if mixing it with cotton. Thanks for the giveaway!

I'm brand new to quilting but not sewing. I normally just iron the fabrics and not wash them before sewing. I'm planning my first quilt and probably will hold the same rule unless it turns out awful and then I'll know better next time.

I did it but now not so often any more. It takes to much time. Now I try to steam iron them before using.
Thanks for the chance.

Kind regards,
Marga♥

I wash my fabrics as soon as they come home and press them before I use them. Fabrics are treated with so many chemicals that I don't want to be breathing or absorbing through my skin as I work with them. It also prevents any nasty surprises when I wash my quilts later. Thanks for the chance to win.

I never prewash my fabrics, but that's okay - we're all different. Would love to be your lucky winner!

Love the fabrics you chose!
About washing/ironing fabrics...NO!
I did start out washing all of my new fabric but that didn't last long at all...LOL! I do like the crispness of new fabric for cutting.

Gorgeous fabric selection. Love the colours. When I first started quilting 15 years ago, I was very diligent about washing and ironing my fabric, but over the years I seem to have stopped doing that. Mostly because I usually only buy fat quarters, jelly rolls, charm packs or fat eighths. If these small pieces of fabric are washed, they tend to fray, so I press them, refold them and put them in my stash and wash the quilt when I'm finished. So far, so good.
