I mentioned before that I got an iPad so blogging would be easier!LOL It was trying for this old dog to learn a new trick! I do have a photo blog and posting on it seemed fine, but I couldn't seem to get my posts to look the way I wanted for my quilt blog. So...I've started a new quilt blog. Simple straight forward, no gadgets, nothing extra right now. I will be posting my quilt news to that blog now.

My first post is a grandaughter's baby quilt that I finished about three weeks ago. I hand quilted it with large Baptist fans. The fabrics were Potluck by American Jane for Moda! The centers were a panel of Dick and Jane with farm animals! Perfect for our newest little cowgirl!

Hope this finds each of you doing well. We are enjoying cooler weather and right now I'm sitting outside watching a light shower, and listening to the thunder!

I have a work table in my laundry room and I have a couple of table topper quilts that I use on it. I thought it would fun to have a quilt for each month to use! The fit I like is a quilt that measures about 24" x 36". So not too big and a great way to use up some of my stash - another goal - make them without having to purchase any fabric!!

It was easy to start as I already had quilts made for January and February.

I finished binding the March quilt this past weekend and got it out today! It's February 11th!!!! But I have been missing my blogging buddies, so have purposed to reconnect. I asked for an iPad for Christmas, and my children blessed me! One of my main desires, was to be able to take photos with the iPad and post directly without having to upload photos from my camera to the desktop. But alas, a big learning curve to master a blog post. I must confess, though, I have been doing other things on the computer, so have not been on blogger much. But here goes!

I have a veeeeerrrrryyyyy llooonnnnnngggggg list of quilts that I want to make - okay now, tell the truth, you do too!!!!! LOL!!!!! So, for 2015' I purposed to piece " a block a day for the year". 365 blocks goes a long way toward making a quilt or two, thus, making some quilts on my list. Now we all know that you don't make it to the sewing room every day, but some days you get in an hour or two, right?! So technically, I didn't piece every day, but I did stitch up 524 blocks in 2015!

Some of the blocks have been assembled, quilted and gifted, but here is a sampling of what I have in various stages of completion.

Time Warp Stars - you know me and star blocks! We had a grand time playing "tourist" in the neighboring towns. We visited a WWII Museum, ate at a Bavarian Restaurant, shopped, sampled goodies at a local Pecan Orchard (and purchased a few, too!) and browsed through Antique Stores. At our last stop, Mike fell in love with a 1913 Singer Model 127 Treadle Sewing Machine. The very next day, she came home to reside in my sewing room (aka "Woman Cave" as Mike calls it!!!)

As you can see, the cabinet is in excellent condition and she is all refurbished and runs great! It was quite a learning curve to learn to treadle, but I've succeeded and have stitched up several nine patch blocks and just this morning I stitched a string of binding. It is very relaxing to treadle and it is nearly as fast as sewing with a motorized machine!!

I named her Myrtle in honor of Mike's paternal grandmother. She passed before I met Mike, but he adored her and from what I hear, she adored him. It was her quilts that Mike inherited that inspired me to start quilting, so I thought the name very fitting.

On the wall behind Myrtle is "Tucker" the latest SAL from Pam over at HeartSpun Quilts
I've been "strong" - I DIDN'T need to make another star quilt!!!! But I couldn't stand it!!!! Ordered the the pattern (BTW nicest people at In Between Stitches!!!).

Selected the focus fabrics:

I bought the green rose calico on ebay a couple of years ago. It was originally purposed for another project, but the colors didn't quite match, so it has been setting in a box (and found when I reorganized!!) The cream tone on tone is one of my all time favorite fabrics and thought it was perfect to use with the calico.

Then went through my stash and selected greens and "roses" that would coordinate.

Then stitched up some blocks. I have found that I do best by assembling the flimsy as I make blocks (if I know how I'm going to set them).

It could be used as a Christmas quilt, but the colors to me or more like a beautiful summer rose garden - hence the name "Country Rose Garden".

Not sure how big I will make it yet - depends when the fabric runs out or I tire of making star blocks - which ever occurs first (and we know which one that will be!!! LOL)

I've started another project for a gift for a family member, so the Country Rose Garden blocks are on hold for a while, but I'll still be working on my leader/ender project: scrappy nine patches. (there is a story behind the blocks - will save it for a post of its own)
But alas, I didn't have any available baskets, so wandered about my house and spied my grandmother's 3 Gallon Crock - Perfect!!! Gathered my small quilts that were stored in a quilt box, fussed and tried different arrangements and settled for this -

Up until a few days ago, much of my fat quarters and smaller yardages were stored in boxes stacked in a closet. Since, I had more space in my sewing room, and pondered about how to had easy access storage right in the sewing room. Voila - two cabinets made with old barn wood and old windows. I hadn't constructed any work projects for a couple of years, so it was fun to get our the tools and go to work. I'm so pleased with my cupboards!
So Mandie and I teamed up again - she made the flimsy and I did the quilting. But it had been a couple of months since I had done any FMQ, so I pulled out some small quilt flimsys, got them basted and did some practice.

This is a little fall quilt that I made from a charm pack sent from a dear friend. I tried a new border design (again from Lori Kennedy). Of course I seem to always add (or subtract) as it suits me, but I love Lori's designs to kick start my FMQ. I think each of us creates our own style and that is what is so cool about quilting - no two quilts are EXACTLY alike and every quilt tells a story!

Then I found a panel (gifted from another dear friend) in my reorganizing and cleaning out, so put together a small quilt to hang on the wall in my "new" sewing room. Though you can't see them, I made my first "bump bump' vine feathers in the borders (black thread on black fabric).

What got me into quilt making was having some quilts that Mike's grandmother had made. I love the vintage scrap quilts, but wanted to expand my horizons and blogger has done just that. But I still find myself leaning toward the "old " quilts. I have several books with old quilts and their stories and one of my favorites is this one by Mary Bywater Cross.

And one of my favorite quilts in the book was made by the women of The Aurora Colony circa 1875.

Several years ago I made a small replica flimsy, but had not quilted it. Thought I might get it hand quilted, but that hadn't happened. I wanted to make my quilting as close as possible to the original with feathered wreaths in the setting blocks and outline quilting in the pieced blocks.

Here's my version which measures about 37" X 46".

My first "big" finish of "bump bump" feathers. I've found I love making them!

Well, I finally got to the "commissioned" quilt, and of course I had to look at it for several days to decide how to quilt it. Lovely fabrics with simply pieced horizontal strips - modern fabrics - so stretching my quilting repertoire once again (builds character I know, I know - but "comfortable" is nice!!)

Decided on hooked swirls, found a pattern/template in one of my magazines and proceeded. About one "pattern" worth and it became pretty much "Free" motion swirls! But it was fun and I think the overall look is pleasing.
Yikes - it happened to me - 6 Yards of really cute flannel fabric - donated to the quilt guild - taken home by me (several months ago) to stitch up into something for our Wee Care Program.
Voila - 4 very nice sized (they measure about 40" square - I made mine a big bigger than in the tutorial) self-binding receiving blankets ready to go!! I used this tutorial to make them.
Okay, so found something else when sorting through drawers - a John Deere Tractor Panel with some John Deere Fabric. Add a border of yellow gingham, baste, simple cross hatch quilting and machine attached binding and a cute quilt for a wee one for the Wee Care Program.
Since I was on a roll with Community Service Projects for the guild, the third project is what is called CPS (Child Protective Services) bags. When a child is removed from a home. their belongings are placed in a pillow cased sized drawstring bag. We try to make them cheerful and fun - but they also have to be sturdy. Mikkie, out oldest daughter, sells baby swings on an etsy shop called Texas Cotton Tales. She uses duck fabric and she had a box of leftover strips. So I took those strips and stitched up 5 drawstring bags.
The summer has flown by!

I've been contemplating whether or not to even blog any more - time constraints, interest waning, etc. etc. etc.

I do love seeing others wonderful projects and sharing a bit of my life with others also, so here goes a multiple post update.

About 3 months ago, I did some deep cleaning of my sewing/creating areas. Firstly, for my "Inspiration Space", I unpiled my desk, rearranged magazines and books and made new curtains.

Secondly, I finally completely took over our son's bedroom for my sewing room. I had been sewing there for a couple of years but hadn't taken down his twin beds or anything from the walls. But I did it and I LOVE it!
Silvia - her primary use is FMQ though I do use her to mend jeans and attach bindings. She sits under the window so I can look out at the sky and occasionally ponder. She is a 1970's model and was made in Italy.
Where does the time go!! A friend told me the other day, "Tomorrow isn't even here yet, and it's already gone!!!!" I never believed my grandmother when she said that time flew the older you get!! My oh My!!!!

Again (I think I've said that way toooooo much!) I've sure been hit and miss on blogger! I do try to drop by a couple times a week and read up - but my oh my where's does the time go!!!

I have been stitching a bit and I've finished up 3 gift quilts (all lap size) in the past few weeks. The first is a Friendship Star (of course!!! LOL) for a friend who moved. This was a spur of the moment gift, but it went very quickly and must say that ALL the fabrics came from the scrap box or my stash!!!
I think if you click on the photos it enlarges and you can see some more of my "practice" designs. I FMQ a new design (for me) in the sashing and did an enlarged sparkling star in the border.

The second quilt was one that I had originally pieced for myself. A couple of years ago I bought a bag of scraps (for $3) at our guild stash sale. I saw a quilt in a magazine and loved it, so used that block pattern - it is a Sister's Choice Variation. I added the neutral background fabrics and bought the border fabric to coordinate. Then it got stuck in a box to quilt later. In January when my high school friend visited me, I decided that she needed this quilt. I had no biological sisters and we always considered ourselves sisters, so thought the pattern was appropriate. I will deliver it to her when we next visit (hopefully this summer or early fall).
Simple FMQ with my favorite go to free form flower. I did try a new border design - bunting inspired by Lori of The Inbox Jaunt.

The third is a high school graduation gift for a daughter of dear friends. She will be attending Texas A&M this fall, so I chose school colors - Maroon & White - I used the gray to add a little flare. I also did the straight line quilting with silver metallic thread to add a little "bling"! Simple swirls in the maroon rectangles finished off the simple quilting. This was a Disappearing Nine Patch block - so quick and easy! And another that I made completely from my scraps and stash!! Yeah!!
Here are some of my small quilt finishes!

For Valentine's I made 5 small quilts (one for myself and one for each of my 4 girls) using the nine patches that I had sewn up for a previous project but didn't use and this sweet valentine fabric! Here's the one I made for my oldest daughter. It was available for photos because Gracen uses it for her Dolls!

I'm sure that many of you have noticed that several bloggers have been making a quilt a month from one of their books and patterns. I've thought about doing that, but just haven't purposed to do it - several other UFOs/WIPs taking precedence. But Kathleen Tracey posted a small quilt from one of her books that I just happened to have. I changed up the color scheme a bit and I also call it "Instant Gratification" - I saw, wanted to make it, so I did. All in a couple of days!

Finally, a couple of months ago, I won our guild's monthly block exchange which were basket blocks - any size, any style, any color. I've opted to make small quilts/projects from them. There were two 4" blocks and I made pincushions from them and donated them back to the guild for a fund raiser. I chose one block (which I made) to make a table topper for my coffee table.

From another block (which I DID NOT make - isn't it beautiful!) I made this pillow. It measures about 8" square.
I really hadn't planned to, DIDN'T need to, SHOULDN'T have, but just couldn't pass up making more star blocks. I'm not sure if I will do it all year long, as my plans are to make blocks from my CW fabrics and when they run out - well I'm done!
I'm now considered a "lurking blogger". I occasionally lurk around blog land, leave a comment once in a while and then disappear again! I'm amazed/intimidated/humbled by those of you who can put together a post once a week. Now those of you who post every day - do you even sleep!!!!!

I have been stitching and have several finishes to share, but first I wanted to share the new addition to my sewing room. Her name is "Black Beauty" and she was "born" March 31, 1891. She was originally a treadle machine, but was converted to electricity later in her life. We are just getting acquainted but I'm am very excited she is here with me. I have wanted a Singer Featherweight for a couple of years, but really haven't pursued finding one, just occasionally perusing flea markets, antique fairs, etc, so when I saw Beauty, I had a nice conversation with the gentleman who had her displayed at his flea market booth. I walked away, but I couldn't stop thinking about her. I did some research on-line and found that she was really a treasure and I would love to do some piecing on her. It was a full month before I returned to the flea market (it is open two weekends a month) and imagine my dismay when Beauty wasn't sitting on his display table. But I asked if him if he remembered me and if he still had the machine and he said "of course" on both counts. We traveled to the gentleman's home the next day and tried her out. She needs the electric cords replaced, but let me tell you - she purrs like a contended mama cat!

I really didn't realize that sewing machines from this era had such beautiful decals until I pieced a jigsaw puzzle of sewing notions that my daughter gave me for my birthday. After I pieced it, I mounted it in a frame and put it in my sewing room. It isn't a great photo, but you can see the four machines in the puzzle.

Just a short note to wish each of you, my dear friends a blessed time with your families and loved ones during this wonderful holiday season!

I've had camera/computer issues, so am unable to post any photos of my quilting activities. But several of my friends have posted some of my recent finishes. So if you don't mind following links, here is a tour of my projects!
My new passion/project (like I needed another!!! LOL) is knitting. I've been doing simple projects, but hope to venture into mittens and socks next year. I'll post photos when the camera/computer issue is resolved!
So when I was reading Maureen's blog post about Lori's latest SAL, I jumped right in - well almost - I didn't start until this morning but I'm all caught up!

I don't just have a baggie of 1 1/2" squares, I have a whole box full. In fact, at the present not counting Lori's SAL, I have 2 other projects going using these small squares - plus a third one in the planning. So, what's one more!!! LOL

I delved into my trusty box and also cut a few from the current scrap box and set the needle to flying.
Maybe because I'm getting older...surely that's not it!!! LOL

Well, over the past couple of months since my last post I have finished several quilting projects. So thought I'd squeeze in a few minutes on this wonderful Sunday afternoon and share them with you.

Firstly, I used the scraps from the CWR quilt and made three small quilts for our night stands and my dresser.
My next finish is the first of six Christmas quilts that I am making for each of the beds in our house. I hope to finish three this year and three next year. I call this one "Joys of Christmas". As you can see, it is a sampler, many of which were in the Farmer's Wife book. I converted them to 8 inch blocks.
I won the September blocks in our guild's Block Exchange. I got on the ball and pieced it into a top and got it all quilted in less than a months time. It went quickly as there were 22 blocks and I only had to make two more to have a 4 x 6 setting. I call it "Sparkling Friendship Stars".
It is cotton harvest time here in Texas, and though we don't farm, there are several big fields near our ranch. This is the first year in several that the cotton farmers have made a crop and we are so happy for them - plus we quilter's can appreciate 100% Cotton! Thus, I couldn't resist a photo shoot in the cotton fields!

Hope each of you are enjoying this cooler season as we are in Texas!
It belongs to a friend of my daughter, Mandie. She bought it at a garage sale for $1!! (Boy, I wish I had been at that garage sale!!!) This was a fun one to quilt, because I never tired of seeing the next fabric!!! So this is a post full of photos...
Oh well, it's done now!!

I called it "Colors of the Sea" - a simple one patch square set on point in different blues. I actually had help with this one - Mandie pieced the top and then I quilted it. I must confess that I started hand quilting it about 4 years ago, but it got set aside. I realized that it would never get finished if I kept hand quilting so I finished up with machine quilting. I did a simple wave pattern to fit the "Sea" theme".
Those that participated, read the selected book, participated in an on-line discussion, and could choose to make a quilt block. I chose to do my blocks as redwork patterns and I FINALLY finished the last one a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure when it will get quilted, there are several other flimsys I would like to quilt first. The red work patterns were of my our research/design (mostly from Google Images) and the fabrics were gifted to me. I thought it will make a great summer/sit under the tree and read a good book quilt!
